[00:00:00] Speaker A: This episode of the New Yorkers Podcast is brought to you by new york100.org recognizing excellence across New York City's five boroughs. Hello everyone and welcome to the New Yorkers, a podcast by New York City Cop. I'm your host, Kelly Kopp, published photographer, New York City tour business owner, real estate content creator, podcaster, and above all else, a New Yorker.
[00:00:22] Speaker B: Ladies and gentlemen, the next Brooklyn bound train in Mount Biden. Stand clear of the closing doors.
[00:00:58] Speaker A: Foreign with me today, I have my good friend Chris Beck.
He is a New Yorker. What? And why don't you tell us about yourself, Chris? And how are you doing, by the way?
[00:01:15] Speaker B: Don't you, don't you. Oh, which one do you want me to insert?
[00:01:18] Speaker A: Whatever order you want.
[00:01:20] Speaker B: I'm doing fabulous. Since we just spent time on the train.
[00:01:23] Speaker A: Right.
[00:01:24] Speaker B: You, you know that I'm, I'm feeling good, feeling fine.
I hate that when somebody asked me, tell me about yourself. Right. Well, I'm handsome, I'm charming.
[00:01:35] Speaker A: Right.
[00:01:35] Speaker B: What else would you like to know?
Well, I look great in a Speedo, right?
[00:01:40] Speaker A: Yes, I've seen you in your Speedo.
I mean, looks great.
[00:01:45] Speaker B: Once you see it, you can't not see it.
[00:01:47] Speaker A: Yeah.
For our listeners, they should know that Chris and I are very good friends and we have known each other for a while.
And when you get he and I together, you can't shut us up.
[00:01:59] Speaker B: And people think that it's a podcast. So the reason we're sitting here is people are like listening to his talk, going, this is just a podcast.
[00:02:05] Speaker A: Right. People have said that to us, definitely.
[00:02:07] Speaker B: Which we just did on the way to the train.
[00:02:08] Speaker A: Yes, exactly. Yeah. So, yeah. So, Chris, you know, you lived in New York how long?
[00:02:15] Speaker B: Probably on and off for about 12 years. So I own an ad agency, 26.2 and Whole Foods Market was one of our clients. So I would come in all the time. And this probably goes back 14 or 15 years then. So we would come in monthly, you know, do the client visit. And I remember telling my, my media director the time I'm like, I'm going to move to New York, I just, you know, you just get here and you know that, right?
[00:02:38] Speaker A: I know.
[00:02:39] Speaker B: And, and yeah. So. And then opened an office here probably eight or nine years ago. So I was still bi. Coastal. And then I think we've lived here full time, like five years.
[00:02:50] Speaker A: Nice.
[00:02:50] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:02:51] Speaker A: But you go back to.
Where do you go? You're gone a lot lately.
[00:02:55] Speaker B: Well, I bought, I had, according to Emily, I had a midlife crisis.
[00:02:59] Speaker A: Right.
[00:02:59] Speaker B: And That I bought a sailboat in Marina Del Rey, and I got to.
[00:03:03] Speaker A: Come out there and go. Still in with you guys. I have to come out there and I. I gotta.
[00:03:07] Speaker B: I gotta. I gotta come out.
[00:03:09] Speaker A: I gotta speak properly on my podcast.
[00:03:11] Speaker B: Okay, you want to speak properly.
[00:03:12] Speaker A: So Emily, which. Who is Chris's wife, just did the potty cast with me recently.
So.
Yeah, so that's Chris's wife.
[00:03:23] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:03:24] Speaker A: So, you know, I've known Chris and Emily. You guys see me do a lot of videos from. When I do these beautiful videos from. Of this beautiful rooftop overlooking New York City.
It is Chris and Emily's beautiful place.
[00:03:35] Speaker B: Well, the funny thing about the podcast was we were sitting around the table in my place, and Maureen, our friend, is there. Sincerely, Maureen.
[00:03:41] Speaker A: And.
[00:03:42] Speaker B: And. And she's listening to you. And. And you. And.
Yeah, she has.
[00:03:45] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:03:46] Speaker B: So she's listening to. To you and Emily riff on toilets just as random conversation over dinner. You know, I mean, that's kind of conversation you want to have, right?
[00:03:53] Speaker A: That's normal conversation.
[00:03:54] Speaker B: Yeah, normal conversation. And. And then Maureen turns and goes like, this is. This is a podcast. And then Emily, because she's also a copywriter, is like, It's a potty cast.
[00:04:03] Speaker A: Yep. That's where this whole potty cast. Two episodes were birthed from. Is that a correct phrase?
[00:04:10] Speaker B: I. I think birthing and potties is.
[00:04:12] Speaker A: Yeah, let's just move on. Let's.
[00:04:14] Speaker B: Let's just.
[00:04:15] Speaker A: They're in the same area.
[00:04:16] Speaker B: Let's just keep on going.
[00:04:17] Speaker A: The same area. Okay, so. Yes.
[00:04:20] Speaker B: Yeah. So I own an ad agency, lived here on and off for 10 or 11 years and was a professional disc jockey before that. So.
[00:04:29] Speaker A: Right.
[00:04:30] Speaker B: Anybody hears on social media, I've started voicing a lot of stuff. And so did announcing for years. Probably 11 or 12 years back when it was fun before you're reading a card.
[00:04:41] Speaker A: Right.
[00:04:42] Speaker B: So, yeah, that's it. So was a disc jockey, then left that, went into sales. Sales management, and then started my own advertising agency that I think we're 16 years into.
[00:04:52] Speaker A: Nice. And where does your Speedo fit in.
[00:04:54] Speaker B: This every summer when it gets above 90.
I'm kidding. Don't. Don't. Don't believe that. There's no Speedo in the apartment. There's no Speedo anywhere.
[00:05:04] Speaker A: Well, that's what we know of. So. Yeah.
[00:05:08] Speaker B: So that's the little black dress.
[00:05:10] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:05:11] Speaker B: On a full moon. Okay, moving along.
[00:05:14] Speaker A: Yeah. So, yeah. So I'm so happy to have Chris here talking with us today. This is gonna be a lot of fun.
So what we're doing today.
Chris, what are we doing today? Why don't you tell them what we're doing?
[00:05:23] Speaker B: So we're just randomly talking the other day about. About. About favorite things about New York or New York things. And we started going back and forth and you said, this is a podcast, so.
[00:05:33] Speaker A: Correct.
[00:05:33] Speaker B: We've got a list of questions. Questions which both of us know what the questions are, but we do not know what each other's answers are.
[00:05:40] Speaker A: Correct.
[00:05:41] Speaker B: So what we're going to do is, is you being the announcer and the host of the show. We'll. We'll ask one of the questions and then we'll just randomly riff on. On whatever that happens to be.
[00:05:50] Speaker A: That's nice. Nice, nice, nice. So the very first one. Shall we start?
[00:05:55] Speaker B: Drum roll, please.
[00:05:58] Speaker A: Things New Yorkers do that tourists don't.
And you know, that's a New Yorker.
[00:06:04] Speaker B: We, we just did it walking to the train. We were like living the podcast.
[00:06:07] Speaker A: Right? Yeah, we did say that.
[00:06:08] Speaker B: Definitely. The speed that we walk on the streets, you can immediately tell is a New Yorker. And the way we cross the streets. See, there is no red light here. They're orange, right? They're orange and white. So we don't technically have a red light.
[00:06:23] Speaker A: Correct.
[00:06:23] Speaker B: So we were doing this walking to the train coming up here today.
[00:06:26] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:06:26] Speaker B: Is like. I kept moving and then you're like. And I'm like, dude, notice that both of them. There's the red light and the orange light and we just walked across because we know that there's no car.
[00:06:34] Speaker A: So we're walking along the sidewalk, we're chatting, we're moving and grooving. Yep. We walk across the street.
Chris is kind of leading the way. Usually someone's leading the way.
[00:06:43] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:06:43] Speaker A: Subconsciously, someone is.
[00:06:44] Speaker B: You're on social media.
[00:06:46] Speaker A: Yeah, I was. Yes. And so, but you know, we're walking across the street. It's a red light per say.
[00:06:51] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:06:51] Speaker A: But I trust Chris because he knows what he's doing crossing the street and it's, you know, we're going against traffic. But then there was an Amazon guy with a bicycle pulling, you know, 200 boxes behind him. So we stop in the street to let him go by.
[00:07:08] Speaker B: Right.
[00:07:08] Speaker A: You know, with courtesy towards each other. There's no words. That is just respect for the hard working Amazon person. Yep. So we let him go by. We continue walking and talking. It's effortless. It's effortless.
[00:07:19] Speaker B: And then we just went. This is a podcast moment right here.
[00:07:21] Speaker A: Yeah, exactly. We said that, you know, it's just the New York way of life.
[00:07:25] Speaker B: But you can see New Yorkers, man. You can see us walking.
[00:07:27] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:07:28] Speaker B: We are moving. I've wanted to do a thing with my meta glasses sometimes leaving the apartment and walking up to Central park to where it's like a fast. Like, where you can actually see a New Yorker. How we're moving and we're grooving and.
[00:07:37] Speaker A: We'Re hitting kind of like when they put, like, a camera on, like a cat running around a neighborhood or something.
[00:07:41] Speaker B: Oh, have you seen those up there on 57?
[00:07:43] Speaker A: Those are so cool. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I got sent in the video, Jay. It's really cool.
[00:07:46] Speaker B: I would say. I would say. The other thing is we know to check subway cars, so tourists, you know, they're standing on a platform. They're worried about, am I going uptown down to. Whatever There's.
[00:07:55] Speaker A: There's.
[00:07:56] Speaker B: But if we're standing, waiting for a subway, and you. You see an empty car, we don't get into that.
[00:08:02] Speaker A: Right, right.
[00:08:03] Speaker B: Because we know better.
[00:08:04] Speaker A: It might have doo doo in it.
[00:08:05] Speaker B: It or. Yes. Somebody drank a little bit too much or.
[00:08:09] Speaker A: Right.
[00:08:10] Speaker B: So there's a. Usually a reason for an empty car.
[00:08:12] Speaker A: Correct.
[00:08:12] Speaker B: Right.
[00:08:13] Speaker A: And if all the. All the other cars are packed, too, and you see an empty car. But, you know people.
[00:08:18] Speaker B: So what are some of your. Like. Like when you know that this is a New Yorker, you just look and.
[00:08:23] Speaker A: Say, well, they will wait for you to get a. To get off the train.
[00:08:26] Speaker B: That is correct.
[00:08:27] Speaker A: They'll definitely wait for you to get off the train. Or they'll get off the train. You know, and then when you get off the train and someone doesn't stop, sometimes I'll see this. I'll see somebody clock someone with their shoulder as they're walking off the train. If someone's walking in. In their way.
[00:08:38] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:08:39] Speaker A: You know what I mean?
[00:08:39] Speaker B: Yes. We wait until then we get on. Right.
[00:08:42] Speaker A: Which is rude. And I wouldn't do. But I do understand why someone walking off the train has a little bit of edge and will kind of knock the person walking onto the train to the side a little. I've seen that.
[00:08:53] Speaker B: Especially a big.
[00:08:54] Speaker A: Yeah. Big people. Yeah, that's happened to me. I. When I was first here, people kind of clocked me in the shoulder, pushing me out of the way because they're getting off the train. So I completely get it. And I knew I was at fault. You know, I'm like, oh, I'm learning. So. But, you know, and New Yorkers also, we're not, you know, we don't we don't really talk on the train either. That much. You know what I'm saying? Like, tourists will talk about where they're from, what they're doing. They're kind of loud, right? You know, we kind of mind our own business, mostly.
[00:09:22] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:09:23] Speaker A: You know, which I still don't get.
[00:09:24] Speaker B: People to wear headphones. Noise canceling headphones. I'll put my AirPods in. But, you know, the. The people that have the AirPod Maxes on that are total noise. I don't. I want to. I want to hear things around me. I want to know that they're. You know what I'm saying?
[00:09:38] Speaker A: I completely agree.
[00:09:39] Speaker C: Especially for the train announcements. Like, I don't understand how you're like, the train announcements. And then they're like, oh, totally.
[00:09:46] Speaker A: I.
[00:09:46] Speaker B: And then. And then do. Can you even understand the train announcement? I'm like. You're like, what? What. What stage?
[00:09:51] Speaker A: But at the same time, I just want to.
Of anything happening on the train.
[00:09:56] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:09:56] Speaker A: Yes. I just like to have my wits about me. Just like, for the announcements that are, you know, that you can make out what they're saying or just anything happening on the train. I want to be aware.
[00:10:07] Speaker B: Yes, absolutely.
[00:10:08] Speaker A: You know, I per. I myself, as you guys know, I was in a train derailment too.
[00:10:12] Speaker B: I was just gonna bait that.
[00:10:13] Speaker A: So there's a little bit. I just want to be aware. And I'm not scared. I'm not, you know, I take. I live on the train, I think, more than. Well, like you, Jay. You and I are on the train a lot.
[00:10:21] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:10:21] Speaker A: You know, so I.
And I'm not scared. I take it two, three, four times a day, day and night, whatever. Never scared. But I still want to be aware. That's the bottom line.
[00:10:31] Speaker B: And the other thing that we definitely do, because I pull people that I know aren't from here back the.
[00:10:36] Speaker A: The.
[00:10:36] Speaker B: We look both ways in a bike lane.
[00:10:38] Speaker A: Oh, perfect.
[00:10:39] Speaker B: Because.
[00:10:40] Speaker A: Yes, dude.
[00:10:40] Speaker B: These e bikes will just go both ways at, you know, 15, 20 miles an hour. So we know to look both ways. And I have pulled more people out of harm's way. Me too, because they're just zipping both ways.
[00:10:53] Speaker A: Yeah. You know, but that's part of the. The New York dance, I guess I'll call it. As we're crossing streets, looking, but, you know, we look first. Left, right, quickly, bike lane.
[00:11:02] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:11:02] Speaker A: Across the back lane. Bike lane. Left, right, quickly, cars. Boom.
[00:11:06] Speaker B: You do that again.
Come on.
[00:11:09] Speaker A: So left, right, quickly, bike lane.
[00:11:11] Speaker B: And now, you know, when we leave here, we're going to be doing that.
[00:11:13] Speaker A: Yeah. But, you know, it's. We learned this delicate dance of New York City. The delicate dance, you know what I mean?
[00:11:18] Speaker B: Sung by Frank Sinatra.
[00:11:20] Speaker A: Yeah, exactly. So, you know, that's what New Yorkers do. So, I mean, I can pick out a New Yorker. They're not going to wait their light. There's. They're just going to go. The tourists always stop at the lights, like you said. You know, you just. It's very easy to see the who the New Yorker is.
[00:11:32] Speaker B: Especially on the streets. Yeah.
[00:11:33] Speaker C: They also stop in the middle of the street.
[00:11:35] Speaker B: Oh, dude. So as.
[00:11:36] Speaker A: As I was walking over here, who saps the tourist?
[00:11:40] Speaker C: I was walking. I work on, like, the top of Broadway and I walk down to Canal street, which, like a subway stop.
[00:11:45] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:11:46] Speaker C: But it's like 10 minutes and Broadway is, like, filled with tourists and, like, going shopping. And they all stop in the middle of the street.
[00:11:53] Speaker B: Or across.
[00:11:54] Speaker C: Yeah, or across.
[00:11:55] Speaker A: Or the sidewalk.
[00:11:56] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:11:57] Speaker C: Oh, yeah. I mean, in the middle of the sidewalk, they stop, like, to check their phone or to check directions.
[00:12:02] Speaker A: Oh, always.
[00:12:02] Speaker C: So then it's just like, move over to the side.
[00:12:05] Speaker B: Totally.
[00:12:06] Speaker C: And then like, check your phone, move over to the side and look for your other. Yeah.
[00:12:10] Speaker A: There was three women in front of me today. Go ahead, go ahead, Jay.
[00:12:13] Speaker C: No, just. Yeah, it's so simple. Like, move over. Like, there's so many people. Yeah.
[00:12:18] Speaker B: I did a reel that I posted one day because I'm walking up 6th Ave. Right where Broadway cuts over. They're right next to Macy's. Right. Which is where a lot of people, with all due respect, get their first sight of the Empire State Building.
[00:12:28] Speaker A: Correct.
[00:12:29] Speaker B: So it.
[00:12:29] Speaker A: Boom.
[00:12:29] Speaker B: Right there. Right.
[00:12:30] Speaker A: Oh, that 34th and 6th, you said.
[00:12:31] Speaker B: Yes, exactly. Right. So I actually just started rolling the camera going, welcome to New York. A couple of public service announcements for you. When you're here, please move to the right or move to the left, but don't stop in the middle. Especially on 6th Ave. Yeah. Which is just buzzing because we're all going to the train stations.
[00:12:50] Speaker A: And anyway, just today I was behind these three very kind ladies. Let me say that first. But they're in front of me and I'm trying to go to the right. And then they, you know, somehow, energy wise, they move to the right, all three of them. You know, I'm behind them and I'm trying to get around them, and then I want to go to the left and then I know they go back over.
[00:13:08] Speaker B: Yeah, that makes.
[00:13:08] Speaker A: And I was craz. I'm just like for the love of Pete. I'm just trying to get around you. Move to the side. For the love of Pete.
[00:13:15] Speaker B: I'm gonna ask Chad.
[00:13:16] Speaker A: GPT.
[00:13:16] Speaker B: What? Pete.
Pete. That's what I'm saying. But that's one of the best things about Chad.
[00:13:21] Speaker A: GPT is like, okay, go ahead, chat. G.B.
[00:13:25] Speaker B: Pete.
[00:13:26] Speaker A: I don't know.
[00:13:26] Speaker B: Oh, well, wouldn't that be funny? Okay, the P. And Chat. Gp.
[00:13:29] Speaker A: Okay. Okay, let's go on to the second question.
[00:13:33] Speaker B: Drum roll, please.
[00:13:34] Speaker A: What's the most New York thing you've ever witnessed and didn't even flinch?
[00:13:39] Speaker B: Do you. Do you want me to really answer this? Okay, so in the first. He's looking at me. I'm getting the look.
[00:13:45] Speaker A: Okay. So I don't know. I'm just. My eyes are like.
[00:13:48] Speaker B: People having sex.
Yep.
[00:13:51] Speaker A: Where?
[00:13:52] Speaker B: An apartment. My first apartment was on the 18th floor. And we live in.
[00:13:56] Speaker A: I like. Oh, yeah.
[00:13:57] Speaker B: And we live in high rises and we don't close our curtains. We don't close our blinds. Because I think there's something a little weird about us. We're like, kind of thinking that's kind of cool. Anyway. But the curtains are never called. And my daughter, who you just met, was. Was on the table. We're eating on the 18th floor. And right, you know, right across the street is your neighbors. Right. You don't know who they are, but you know about them. Were you in. That was 806 stuff. So I was at 27th and 6th.
[00:14:21] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:14:22] Speaker B: And. And I get a text from Emily going, whatever you do, don't let Ferris turn around. Because this guy was putting on a show. I mean, we are, like, talking. We are like, even if your eyeballs scan there, they would have been, you know, pulled in there because there was a lot of motion. Anyway, so that. That. Which I didn't think about. I'm like, yeah, well, you see this kind of, like, even at the gym at my building, people are like, oh, the building right across the street there. You know, the.
[00:14:46] Speaker A: That reminds me actually of the Standard Hotel is known for that. When you're walking on the High Line.
Exactly. That is known for people being, you know, being put down.
You know, So I would.
[00:14:58] Speaker B: I would say that. That. And the other one that came to my mind is, is when we pass crazy people on the street.
[00:15:04] Speaker A: That's exactly what I was going to say.
[00:15:06] Speaker B: Oh, well, then I didn't even read your answer. I know, but then we don't know.
[00:15:08] Speaker A: I didn't write anything.
[00:15:09] Speaker B: But can you both of you guys give me the opinion here? So so we passed. We don't even think about it. And I just had a dude in L. A. I was at the boat and I was walking, and there's a guy that he comes up to me and I went up to him and I went, bro, I'm from New York. You can just let this go right now.
And he turns around and walks off because I'm like, you know, but do you. Okay. When you see. And I understand mental health and that we have challenges with that. So I'm caveating. That's with.
[00:15:35] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:15:35] Speaker B: That I'm a senseless soul. But we do have a couple of those.
[00:15:40] Speaker A: Right.
[00:15:40] Speaker B: And so do you look them in the eye or not?
So that's the thing is, like, when you see that, it's. Do you engage them? I've decided you don't give eye contact because that means they're invisible.
[00:15:52] Speaker A: I don't engage with them or no eye contact, but I.
Correct. I don't engage with them. I don't give them eye contact.
However, I don't move out of the way. I'm not worried. I'm not concerned either. Like, that's. That's the. When I think of the most New York thing I've ever witnessed, I'm thinking about them on the subway and I'll see someone who is. Has some.
Some issues.
[00:16:13] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:16:14] Speaker A: And.
And we just sit in the car and what'd you say?
[00:16:19] Speaker B: We just stay there?
[00:16:19] Speaker A: Yeah. And I mean, I actually might sit next to them if it's an empty seat because I'm tired, I want to sit down, and I'm not worried. We tend to recognize some of them sometimes, too.
[00:16:27] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:16:27] Speaker A: We see them often, so we're used to them.
[00:16:30] Speaker B: And we know that Emily knows some of their names.
[00:16:32] Speaker A: Yeah, exactly. And so we're. You. We're used to them. We're not worried. And we are empathetic and sympathetic to who. That, you know, what their situation is. And I've actually.
I've seen a couple. I. One time, I. Only one time it was an end of, you know, so I don't want to blame. Put blame. Put this on tourists, but it was just one person, and he was kind of messing with a.
Someone who was mentally ill. And I said something. I told him to leave alone.
[00:16:56] Speaker B: I do, too.
[00:16:57] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:16:57] Speaker B: I think that's a New Yorker thing.
[00:16:58] Speaker A: Yeah, we don't. Yeah, that's part.
[00:17:00] Speaker B: We will. And you know, that's interpreted as being rude in some cases. I think we are the least rude city in the.
[00:17:05] Speaker A: Right.
[00:17:06] Speaker B: We. We're helpful. We're just talking about helping people when we see them on the phone and like, where are you going?
[00:17:10] Speaker A: But.
[00:17:10] Speaker B: But that. No, yeah, you don't.
[00:17:12] Speaker A: That reminds me, another time, I. There was a guy, a homeless guy. Just a homeless guy sleeping on the train. Yep. And these tourists started taking. Doing.
[00:17:21] Speaker B: Oh, my God.
[00:17:22] Speaker A: Pictures with him, you know, and they were laughing, and I yelled at him. I said, don't do that.
[00:17:26] Speaker B: Come on, man, don't do that. That's not.
[00:17:28] Speaker A: You know, you don't know his story. He's.
[00:17:29] Speaker B: And you don't know where you're gonna be in two years. With all due respect. Okay. You don't know where you're gonna.
[00:17:34] Speaker A: Anyway.
Yeah. So when it comes to people who, you know, who appear to tourists that are scary, you know, are frightening, we.
[00:17:43] Speaker B: Don'T really think about it.
[00:17:44] Speaker A: We don't even think about it. We sit there. I will. I'll play on my phone. I won't even flinch. I mean, I'll. I'll even move back so they can walk past me. You know, we're aware of our surroundings always. But, you know, I. I have.
Yeah, totally. That's. That's exactly what it is. You know, I look at. And I look at everybody else on the train who I know are New Yorkers, because they don't. They're not doing anything either.
[00:18:02] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:18:03] Speaker A: They're not even affected.
[00:18:05] Speaker B: So then I took yours. So then we have to go to the next question, I guess, or you took.
[00:18:09] Speaker A: How'd you take.
[00:18:09] Speaker B: Why. Why? You said that. I was going to say that. When you see people.
[00:18:12] Speaker A: No, I would say it's mine, though. We're. We're in this together.
[00:18:15] Speaker B: We're collectively you. I'm wearing my purple shirt, so I can sing that.
[00:18:20] Speaker A: So the next question is, what's the smallest NYC moment that ever made you feel like, yeah, I belong here.
[00:18:29] Speaker B: You were there.
So that is the. The. The first thing that came to my mind when. When we had this question was the New York Public Library Halloween costume contest. That Tim Gun, who does this every year out of the goodness of his heart. And we love him.
He judges the costume. Emily and I won number one.
[00:18:52] Speaker A: Yeah, you did.
[00:18:53] Speaker B: That was just awesome.
Yeah, I got your selfie with. With Tim.
[00:18:57] Speaker A: That was really fun night in general.
[00:18:59] Speaker B: That was. That. That's one of the best events. I think it's one of the least known events.
[00:19:03] Speaker A: And every year you guys do it now.
[00:19:04] Speaker B: Yes, we've. So we've taken first, second, and third.
[00:19:07] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:19:07] Speaker B: So now we're coming back this year, which you're going to be participating, by the way. You are a part of the costume this year. We are. We. We got to go for one again because we got two last year and.
[00:19:18] Speaker A: Tim Gunn knows you guys well now.
[00:19:19] Speaker B: No, he. Yeah, he does. He does. He's. He's. He's just.
[00:19:22] Speaker A: Because when you won first, he's. I went. Not this year, but last year.
He was. He's like rooting you guys on, basically, because you were. When I was there, you were. The Secret Garden.
[00:19:32] Speaker B: Yes, the Secret Garden. Yes.
[00:19:33] Speaker A: And Tim loved it.
[00:19:34] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:19:35] Speaker A: And you guys, everybody loved it. It was, it was just this. Emily, you know, Chris's wife is a designer. You know, what do they call.
[00:19:43] Speaker B: There's a word for that now? A creator. Not. Not a maker, a maker.
[00:19:48] Speaker A: She.
[00:19:48] Speaker B: She makes stuff. She does artwork.
[00:19:50] Speaker A: She does. So talented. The. The.
[00:19:51] Speaker B: The Easter Bonnet Parade, which are coming off of.
People had to have seen us because we were the America for the BBC with her outfit.
[00:19:58] Speaker A: Yeah, for the East Parade. Yeah.
[00:20:01] Speaker B: It was crazy. And then we're seeing the BBC and we're getting all these people, like what, you know, a homepage of Women's Wear Daily and all this. And then it was the BBC around the world and there was the Pope and the Pope's. The new Pope and the Pope's destiny. And there's like Emily and I for America.
[00:20:15] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:20:16] Speaker B: All right.
[00:20:16] Speaker A: That's awesome. It was, it was beautiful.
[00:20:18] Speaker B: This is how we just walk around the streets of New York.
[00:20:20] Speaker A: Well, for me, for me, the smallest New York City moment, I'll say moments, you know, that they make me feel like I belong here. It's just when random people just ask me for directions, you know, and for instance, just coming to your apartment today, before we came to the podcast, there was this lady. She was this 80 year old lady. She told me how old she was when she met me.
She's. And I said, I'm not far behind you. You know, we were joking around. She's super sweet and she's like, just describing this store and she just said, you know, I'm looking for this store. It has really nice, you know, label names, but it's a little bit more or less. A little bit less expensive. And she's trying to describe it to you.
[00:20:56] Speaker B: Nordstrom Rack.
[00:20:56] Speaker A: It was Nordstrom's. Yeah, yeah. Right up to a block up.
[00:20:59] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:20:59] Speaker A: And well, first of all, she goes, do you live here? I said, well, yeah, my good friend lives right here in this building I'm about to walk into. But yeah, I know the area, I guess Pretty well. And then she told me. I go, oh, I think it's Nordstrom's. And she goes, that's it? And she's like, you want to. And we were talking for a few moments. Then that's what makes it so amazing, because we. You know, when there's these little conversations that start, then it becomes something more, and we're talking about other things. And she's like, do you want to walk up here with me? I'm like, no, I gotta go. I gotta get going. I gotta see Chris, you know? But she's like, I just love talking. I go, me too. And, you know, that's what New York is about.
[00:21:31] Speaker B: It is totally what it's about. I think this goes into another question, but we were at Novita, one of our favorite places, the other night. Just. It's in Gramercy. And we're sitting outside because it's like one of those first nights you can actually sit outside. Right. And we did not know anybody. So it's Emily and I on, quote, date night, which just means I'm not allowed to do any social media or any pictures because that's. You've been there, you know that. That's. You've been lectured a little bit. And I'm like, I have.
[00:21:57] Speaker A: Yes. Just today she said a little conversation. God bless. She's right. She's right.
[00:22:02] Speaker B: But anyway, so we're sitting there, and then this guy at the table, we start talking to. And then the ladies that sat next to him we start talking to. Were now like, he is one of the most well known, like, forensic architects in the city of New York City. This guy is famous. And. And we're just sitting there talking. And. And then the ladies are over here, and they've lived there forever. And she's. And we meet the dog, and the dog's over the table, and we all left and. And we were all friends. I mean, we're. And we're like, oh, my God, we're going to see you again. Because it's kind of a local, you know, Italian restaurant. Right. But totally. I mean, that's so New York.
[00:22:41] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:22:42] Speaker B: You know, people are like, oh, my God, you're. You're alone in this big city. And it's like, you can be alone in the big city if you want to. You can also meet people, like, on the street, randomly. 80. You could have gone shopping with her.
[00:22:53] Speaker A: I could have. I would have.
[00:22:54] Speaker B: Yeah. Because you are fashioned. Let me just tell you, if you are new to Kelly Cop, this man just exudes fashion.
[00:23:02] Speaker A: Yep. I have on my blue jeans and my black sweatshirt. It is stunning.
[00:23:06] Speaker B: When Emily and I tried to take you to Second street and. And get you some. Some. Some street clothing.
[00:23:12] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Emily. Chris want to dress me up a little. They want to class me up. Class it up. Yes. You know, I'm just a. Just a simple man from Florida. Yeah.
So the next one, my friends.
Oh, places that you. Places that feel like you're on a movie set in New York City.
[00:23:35] Speaker B: Isn't that. That's just New York City, right? I mean, it's like. Yeah.
[00:23:38] Speaker A: What. What was yours?
[00:23:40] Speaker B: So our newest one. So I'm gonna go. Go forward backwards.
[00:23:44] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:23:44] Speaker B: Because we random. So if you live here, there's some bad vibe about Tavern on the Green, right? You're like. People are like, oh, my. It's for tourists. So we've never been in there. So we pass it all the time at CP Already. Central Park.
[00:23:55] Speaker A: Sorry.
[00:23:55] Speaker B: And. And we go in there and have dinner one night. Food was spectacular.
That is a movie set. You are sitting outside under the. The. The. The chandelier lights that are hanging out there, and you're just like, I am sitting in a movie set. Tavern on there. You know, Beautiful.
[00:24:13] Speaker A: And you can see the skyline too.
[00:24:15] Speaker B: Oh, it's so. It's so beautiful.
[00:24:18] Speaker A: That's. I mean, I. I'm in love with Tavern the Green. I mean, Christmas time, too. Oh, my God. They have a tree lighting now every year, I think.
[00:24:24] Speaker B: Oh, I did not know that.
[00:24:26] Speaker A: Starting this year. I think it's the third or it's the third one this year.
It's just. You can sit inside or outside. It's so elegant. The food's great. Like you said, people are like some people.
[00:24:34] Speaker B: And we know the. The manager now. We've been there a couple of times. So you know, the manager, he's like, call me. And. And I thought the food was spectacular.
[00:24:42] Speaker A: It's. It's beautiful day and night. And if you need a restroom, let's. You can go inside. Tavern.
[00:24:48] Speaker B: Yeah, that. Well, the nice ones inside.
[00:24:50] Speaker A: The nice ones that. I mean, the center on the outside, which actually, the park ones are really nice too, which I was surprised about.
[00:24:55] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:24:55] Speaker A: But the. The rest. The one I did. Those are three. Want to go? No pun intended.
[00:25:02] Speaker B: Oh, my God. This is why you've got the podcast. Just. Did you all hear how that just rolled up? And then the. The other one that came immediately to mind, and I've got a picture of Emily and I that I. I made somebody take.
[00:25:13] Speaker A: Right. Is.
[00:25:14] Speaker B: Is the temple of Den doer in the Met.
[00:25:18] Speaker A: What?
[00:25:19] Speaker B: Where Harry met Sally in the. In. In the. I think it's called the Egyptian Room or something. It's.
[00:25:23] Speaker A: I don't know.
[00:25:25] Speaker B: Oh, my God. Emily's taking you on a tour of the mat you had to go to in the room with the temple where Harry met Sally. And standing.
[00:25:31] Speaker A: She brought up when Mary met Harry met Sally. Maybe she did. I don't remember. They, they, they.
[00:25:36] Speaker B: They're holding hands there. And we had to do the whole pose.
[00:25:39] Speaker A: No, I don't remember this.
[00:25:41] Speaker B: Oh, my God.
[00:25:41] Speaker A: I was.
Yeah, but go ahead. I'm sorry.
[00:25:45] Speaker B: Well, you weren't with us in that moment.
[00:25:47] Speaker A: Right.
[00:25:48] Speaker B: But she took you on a tour to the map.
[00:25:49] Speaker A: That's what I mean. I don't.
It was so beautiful, though, that. The bet. But go ahead.
[00:25:53] Speaker B: No, but that. That's one of those people. You're like, I'm sitting literally on a movie set. You know, I mean, when you. When you ask a question like, like that you feel you are, in fact.
[00:26:03] Speaker A: Right.
[00:26:03] Speaker B: Movies.
[00:26:04] Speaker A: Right.
[00:26:04] Speaker B: You know, it's like, so what? What? So.
[00:26:07] Speaker A: Well, I think that what makes me feel like I'm in a movie set. And I've thought that too, and I'm aware of and grateful for is standing on the Brooklyn Bridge. Oh. You know, at sunset.
[00:26:19] Speaker B: Totally.
[00:26:20] Speaker A: Right. When the lights of the city are coming on, and it's just breathtaking.
And I'm just like, think to myself, I live in New York City. This is the best city in the world.
[00:26:32] Speaker B: That is a definite I live in New York City moment. And we.
[00:26:35] Speaker A: I mean, any time of day, actually. But that's, you know, to make a point to go at that time. It's truly a movie. It is, you know.
[00:26:42] Speaker B: Well, it is a movie.
[00:26:43] Speaker A: It's been in so many movies.
[00:26:44] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:26:45] Speaker A: You know.
[00:26:46] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:26:47] Speaker A: You had. Did you have any more?
[00:26:48] Speaker B: Did I have any more?
[00:26:50] Speaker A: How about. I got another one. Okay, you can. No, go, Go. Go time.
[00:26:54] Speaker B: It's your show. Well, Times Square.
[00:26:56] Speaker A: Go ahead.
[00:26:56] Speaker B: Absolutely.
[00:26:57] Speaker A: What do you think about that?
Times Square is.
[00:26:59] Speaker B: See, to me, Times Square because we.
[00:27:02] Speaker A: Were there last year together.
[00:27:04] Speaker B: Well, well, yes. And we've. We've been there multiple times together.
[00:27:07] Speaker A: Right. For New Year's Eve.
[00:27:09] Speaker B: That was crazy New Year's Day. But see, that, to me, is like a moment of New York, the time.
If you've never been to. To New Year's Eve at Times Square, that is just a. A game changer. Yeah. I mean, it's like. It's something I watched from a kid.
[00:27:24] Speaker A: Right.
[00:27:24] Speaker B: You know, this Was like back in the day of Dick Clark, before Ryan and. And to be there in New Year's Eve, that's. That's amazing.
[00:27:31] Speaker A: It was raining this last year.
[00:27:32] Speaker B: Oh, my God. It was so crazy, but it was awesome. I know. We had thunder. We had thunder and lightning. Remember? I was with Beth. Little kid, big city, New York City. And we're. We're hiding under the. The ABC Studios, or now former abc Times Square Studios as of today.
[00:27:48] Speaker A: Marco was there.
[00:27:49] Speaker B: Marco was there. And Maureen. You and Maureen were dancing in the rain.
[00:27:52] Speaker A: Maureen was there. That.
[00:27:53] Speaker B: That was a fun.
[00:27:54] Speaker A: That was dancing in the rain on New Year's Eve in Times Square. How much?
[00:27:57] Speaker B: No, right. With the rain. No, it was crazy. It was.
[00:28:00] Speaker A: So that's a New York City movie moment.
[00:28:02] Speaker B: Yes, that is definitely.
[00:28:04] Speaker A: Yeah, it was. It was really cool.
[00:28:07] Speaker B: And you got to say Ghostbusters. I mean, we just went through this whole thing. The Ghostbusters, Ladder 11. What is it? Ladder. Oh, you mean fire Station, Ladder 8 or Ghostbusters.
[00:28:15] Speaker A: The fire station right there. Yeah, yeah, that's.
[00:28:18] Speaker B: That's definitely movies.
[00:28:19] Speaker A: That's actually just down the street here from here, just a few blocks.
How about you, Jay? You like the. Any of these?
[00:28:25] Speaker C: Yeah. I was also gonna say, if you've been on, like, one of the boats as it's going underneath the Brooklyn Bridge.
[00:28:32] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:28:32] Speaker B: Oh, yes. Like the Circle Line or the ferry.
[00:28:35] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:28:36] Speaker B: Fairy's got to be one of the most underrated things in New York City. I mean, the New York City ferry is only four. Oh, my God.
[00:28:41] Speaker A: $4, I think.
[00:28:42] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:28:43] Speaker A: And coming down from, like, 34 downtown direction.
[00:28:47] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:28:47] Speaker A: And then it's Sunset, too. Holy moly.
[00:28:50] Speaker B: Oh, so great.
[00:28:51] Speaker A: Yeah, that's a good one, Jay, too.
[00:28:53] Speaker B: And then you go right under. And then you pull up in Dumbo. Right, right, right under. Like, literally right under the bridge.
[00:28:59] Speaker A: Yeah, you're literally down under the Brooklyn Bridge.
[00:29:03] Speaker B: And you got to call out the Empire State Building. I mean, you gotta. You know, you've gotta. You've got to call that one.
[00:29:08] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:29:08] Speaker B: I mean, because it's like that, and you. You can see it. I mean, I'm walking back from Italy last night.
Gelato fix. And they, you know, you just see people right there on Broadway at about 26, you know, when you can all of a sudden see the.
[00:29:23] Speaker A: The.
[00:29:23] Speaker B: You know, and. And they're just standing there and they're taking pictures, and it's just like, I love people seeing that, you know, the. The. That. And that's. That's iconic.
[00:29:32] Speaker A: You mean the Empire State Building, as you're looking at it and you're not on the Empire. Correct.
[00:29:36] Speaker B: As you're up. But when you're on. What is it? 86 floor?
[00:29:39] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:29:40] Speaker B: Yeah, 86 floor. That's just iconic with the. With the things that you look through.
[00:29:44] Speaker A: Right. You know, and the viewfinder things.
[00:29:46] Speaker B: Yeah, the viewfinder things.
[00:29:47] Speaker A: And this is the technical word. I don't know.
[00:29:50] Speaker B: Viewfinderfinder. Yeah, we know.
[00:29:52] Speaker A: I don't know. I don't know what it is. Yeah, and they're free, but they're.
Yeah, that. That's really pretty. That's. That's really nice. And in addition, I will say, I think a beautiful New York moment, movie moment, is on Top of the Rock.
Because I love the views with the Empire State Building in my view, looking at Manhattan. I mean, lower Manhattan, you can see Central park above.
[00:30:17] Speaker B: I have yet to be there.
[00:30:18] Speaker A: You've never been to Top of the Rock? Whoa, whoa, wait. Hold on a second.
[00:30:21] Speaker B: I'm serious.
[00:30:22] Speaker A: You have never been to Top of the Rock? Are you. How.
[00:30:25] Speaker B: No, we all go there. No, I understand. I've been in the NBC studios. I've been Charlene's, like, you gotta get there. You were gonna take me one night. I think it was raining or something. And it's just randomly. I've just never been there. I don't know.
[00:30:36] Speaker A: We all go out, like, to.
How I'm still perplexed.
[00:30:41] Speaker C: Oh, he's never taken me either, so I feel bad.
[00:30:45] Speaker A: Wow. Okay, well, we all gotta go.
Let's go. Let's do it. Yeah, but the views, I mean.
[00:30:51] Speaker B: No, I know, because it's all open, too.
[00:30:53] Speaker A: Yes, you're all. You're way up there. It's all open. There's no even glass in front of you around the very top. And it's just. It's truly just breathtaking.
[00:31:03] Speaker B: Breathtaking.
[00:31:03] Speaker A: Yes, it is. New York City in your face. And it's. It's just incredible.
I mean, people have dreams to come here.
[00:31:13] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:31:13] Speaker A: And we are so blessed. And I'm so grateful that I'm here in the best city in the world to see these views every day.
[00:31:22] Speaker B: And, you know where you really feel that is. Is. Is Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. And people come from all over the world to see that tree. And we're lucky because we get to see it come up and pull up and, you know, then raising it up and. And, you know, it's just that. That is a moment people just are in awe of. And you think it's going to be great, but that's one of those things that's, like, legit great, you know, you.
Although we've got a lot of people coming to look at it now, it is legit great.
[00:31:52] Speaker A: And also, as the famous singer once said, too legit to quit.
[00:31:57] Speaker B: Okay, you sing that for us now. No, come on. I mean, remember that song?
[00:32:00] Speaker A: Of course you do, because you're a dj, you know. You know, too legit to quit. MC Hammer.
[00:32:05] Speaker B: I was being.
[00:32:06] Speaker A: Oh, you're being. Do you know that song?
[00:32:08] Speaker C: I don't know if I know that one.
[00:32:10] Speaker A: It's old School. It's 80s.
Anyway, it has nothing to do with the podcast. I'm sorry, everybody.
[00:32:15] Speaker B: He does this all the time. He's always.
[00:32:17] Speaker A: Chris and I always.
[00:32:18] Speaker B: What was a song that you threw out coming up here today? Oh, it was on the radio.
[00:32:22] Speaker A: Oh, but you knew it. You knew it.
[00:32:24] Speaker B: Well, yes. That was everything.
[00:32:27] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:32:27] Speaker B: Yeah, that was. Yeah.
[00:32:29] Speaker A: So the next one is things that make you fall back in love with New York.
[00:32:33] Speaker B: We were talking about this question before we came here, and I think we both. It's walking out the door.
[00:32:41] Speaker A: We did say that.
[00:32:42] Speaker B: It's walking out the door, right? Like, it's like you can be down. You can be.
[00:32:51] Speaker A: You.
[00:32:52] Speaker B: You just leave your place and you're in New York City, and. And we'll just. You know, our big deal is we'll.
[00:32:59] Speaker A: We'll.
[00:33:00] Speaker B: We walk Saturday, Sunday, just all over the place.
[00:33:02] Speaker A: Right, Right.
[00:33:02] Speaker B: And. And there'll be festivals and carnivals and. And movie shooting, and we just.
[00:33:08] Speaker A: You know, you're just here just walking out your front door of where you live. That is every day. What makes me fall in love with New York City every day.
[00:33:18] Speaker C: Hopefully mine is seeing it from my living room.
[00:33:20] Speaker A: Yes. You have an amazing view.
[00:33:23] Speaker B: Nice.
[00:33:24] Speaker A: He has this Brooklyn view looking up to Manhattan. It's incredible.
[00:33:29] Speaker C: Yeah, they can. The Statue of Liberty is right there. You can see.
[00:33:32] Speaker A: Imagine having the Freedom Tower, and then.
[00:33:35] Speaker C: The Empire State Building's a bit farther back. You can see, like, the trains.
[00:33:38] Speaker A: I remember the first time I went to your rooftop.
[00:33:41] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:33:41] Speaker A: And I was just like, holy moly.
[00:33:44] Speaker C: Yeah. It's incredible. I'm very lucky to be able to.
[00:33:47] Speaker A: You are, Jay. That's awesome.
[00:33:49] Speaker B: You know, another one is the first day in New York City of a new season.
[00:33:56] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
[00:33:57] Speaker B: So, like, being. Having lived most of my other life in California, there's, like, two seasons there. Right. It's 2.5 seasons a year. Right. But the first, like.
And. And the first snowfall.
[00:34:12] Speaker A: Oh, you just.
[00:34:13] Speaker B: Oh, you. Kelly raised his hand. Let's call On Kelly. Kelly. Yes. Okay.
[00:34:17] Speaker A: I feel like Horse shack. Oh, oh, oh. Horse shacks from an old movie. I'm bringing up all.
[00:34:21] Speaker B: You're gonna have to explain this to Jay.
[00:34:23] Speaker A: That's from. What was that show Horseshack was in Walking Back Cotter, where the view you have from your apartment building is. Is that area.
[00:34:31] Speaker B: And those of you that are listening and can sing that and hear that song in your mind, you know you're old.
[00:34:36] Speaker A: Y.
So yes. That's.
Things that make you fall back in love with New York is walking through Central Park.
[00:34:44] Speaker B: Oh, my God.
[00:34:45] Speaker A: When it's snowing.
[00:34:46] Speaker B: Oh, my God. I literally have a video of. Of. Of. Because I was sneaking a video when we were up. It was one of the December days when we had the snow and we got up to CP really early. And I've got Emily on video, which could be a meme going, this is a movie. You know, it's like you're just looking back and you're. You're. You're looking, you know, at 59th street and billionaires Row, and, you know, you've got the quiet. Oh, my God.
[00:35:12] Speaker A: It's so.
[00:35:12] Speaker B: And the dogs running around. And the dogs just love it, right?
[00:35:16] Speaker A: Yeah, the dogs go bonkers.
[00:35:17] Speaker B: Oh, my God. They just love it. Yeah.
[00:35:19] Speaker A: Yeah. And it's just.
I'll never forget the first time of my life that I felt real joy. This is no joke. And I was aware of that feeling of joy is when I was walking through Central park the first time it snowed, and it was just covered in all this snow. There was an afternoon snowstorm, actually, and it ended around maybe 4pm Yep. We'll say maybe a little bit earlier. Morning ended at around 1 or 2pm So I was walking around 3pm and this, like, foot of snow. The last time it snowed like that.
[00:35:50] Speaker B: Yeah, I was going to say we have.
[00:35:52] Speaker A: The sun was out, all the dogs were running around like crazy. All the kids were sledding.
The. The sound. Just the beauty of Central park covered in the snow with the sunlight. I remember just feeling this joy that I.
[00:36:04] Speaker B: Euphoria.
[00:36:05] Speaker A: Euphoria. I was like, I've never felt pure joy before, and this is it.
[00:36:09] Speaker B: And isn't Central park just a gem? I mean.
[00:36:12] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:36:12] Speaker B: Any time of the year, you know, we'll be walking there in the middle of winter when all the trees are bare and you can see all the buildings around.
[00:36:20] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:36:21] Speaker B: And we'll be like, in two months, this is going to be a green canopy.
[00:36:25] Speaker A: Right. You know, a few more months, it's going to be all these golden reds and.
[00:36:28] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:36:28] Speaker A: And orange.
[00:36:29] Speaker B: Oh, my God. And the Ramble. Oh, my God, the Ramble in the fall.
And then.
Yeah.
[00:36:37] Speaker A: I mean, I.
Central park definitely makes me fall in love with.
[00:36:42] Speaker B: Well, how many times have we run into each other, Chris?
[00:36:45] Speaker A: I run into Central park, like, literally time.
[00:36:46] Speaker B: Literally all the time. And then I just ran into Mickey. We're talking about this. I was on. On another trip. Okay. I have multiple trips to Italy every day. Don't. No judgment. No judgment.
[00:36:56] Speaker A: A little concerned.
[00:36:56] Speaker B: And, you know, but I'm like, moshe is her husband. And I was like, oh, my God, that looks like Moshe. And then there they were.
[00:37:03] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:37:04] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:37:05] Speaker A: Okay, so NYC smells good. Good, bad, or.
[00:37:09] Speaker B: And we both said the same thing. Okay, let's see if Jay says this.
So a New York City smell.
What is the first thing that comes to mind?
You have taken too long, Jason.
[00:37:26] Speaker C: I think about. What do I think about it? Those, like, exhaust pipes that come from the middle of the street.
[00:37:34] Speaker B: Oh, the steam pipes.
[00:37:36] Speaker C: Yeah, the steam. That's what I think about.
[00:37:38] Speaker B: See, we both said marijuana.
[00:37:40] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:37:40] Speaker B: It's like, oh, my goodness.
[00:37:42] Speaker A: It's like as. Now that it's legal, I mean, it's everywhere.
[00:37:46] Speaker B: And you need a dispensary on. I mean, you need more dispensaries than we have. Duane Read.
[00:37:50] Speaker A: I feel bad.
[00:37:51] Speaker C: They put a dispensary at the bottom of my building, and I was really hoping that it would be a pizzeria because there's no pizza place on the Avenue.
[00:37:58] Speaker B: Well, now you can go to the dispensary and you'll want even more pizza. Yeah, you're going to want two slices, not just one.
[00:38:05] Speaker C: But I have to order the pizza on doordash and I have to, like.
[00:38:09] Speaker A: Yeah, wait.
[00:38:09] Speaker C: And I could have just gone downstairs and gotten pizza, but now I have to, like.
[00:38:13] Speaker A: I'm sorry, Jay.
[00:38:14] Speaker B: But now you can go down and get your indica. Your sativa, your hype, you know.
[00:38:17] Speaker A: Well, you know, my other smell was the subway smell.
[00:38:20] Speaker B: Yeah, no, I know, but my.
[00:38:21] Speaker A: The smell. I'm thinking sometimes a car smells pretty nasty, which is not. Not a lot. But, you know, but I. I think of the smell of the subway tunnels itself, like, kind of like the exhaust, like Jason and the. And, you know, just the metal and.
[00:38:34] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:38:34] Speaker B: The subway has, like, a very specific, Very specific smell. Yeah. You could be, like, blind. It doesn't bother me and say, what is this smell? Would be stuff.
[00:38:41] Speaker A: But I'm not. It's not a bad smell.
[00:38:43] Speaker B: Unless you get into the Wrong car.
[00:38:45] Speaker A: Which someone went. You know, also the.
[00:38:48] Speaker C: Like rain on the concrete because there's so much of it.
[00:38:51] Speaker B: Okay. Yeah.
[00:38:52] Speaker A: Whenever, after a rainstorm that.
[00:38:54] Speaker B: Isn't that magical? The smell of New York City after a rainstorm, you know, or spring.
[00:39:00] Speaker A: I instantly thought of Times Square.
[00:39:01] Speaker C: Oh, spring, spring, spring.
[00:39:04] Speaker B: Oh, my God. You just walking in the canopy on the.
Up at Central park, you know, if the wind's blowing just right, you know, and then you can.
[00:39:14] Speaker A: You. You get these.
[00:39:15] Speaker B: Just smells.
[00:39:16] Speaker A: Cherry blossoms.
[00:39:17] Speaker B: Oh, my God.
[00:39:19] Speaker A: Magic.
[00:39:20] Speaker B: Now that. That would also qualify as a movie set. The cherry blossoms.
[00:39:23] Speaker A: Yeah. You know, cherry blossoms. Definite. Definite movie set and definite smells that are just.
[00:39:28] Speaker B: Oh, my God. So amazing. And I ran into Mickey there this year, too. She's doing a live.
[00:39:33] Speaker A: Yeah, we always do.
[00:39:34] Speaker B: I know.
[00:39:35] Speaker A: Yeah, I was ready.
[00:39:36] Speaker B: This is the thing. Is it like big city, small town, right? You've run people all the time.
[00:39:40] Speaker A: You know, how about the next one, my friends, is. What's your most irrational New York City fear?
I have some, obviously think getting pushed.
[00:39:53] Speaker C: Into the subway, like.
[00:39:54] Speaker A: Oh, really?
[00:39:55] Speaker B: Yeah. See, I could see that. That would be in my top three, maybe. Actually, it's like when you're on the.
[00:40:00] Speaker A: Edge, I rarely think about that. And I. I'm stupid. I do.
[00:40:03] Speaker B: Well, you had a subway experience, too. But.
[00:40:05] Speaker A: Yeah, well, see, I. As most of the listeners know, I was in a subway crash, but ironically, I don't ever think of. I don't. That specific situation actually taught me some things, like how to get off the subway if it does crash. So actually it makes me feel. It made me feel more confident on the train because now I know what to do.
[00:40:26] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:40:26] Speaker A: And now I actually know. This is another thing. We were. We were scared of a huge fire that was going to happen on the train.
[00:40:32] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:40:33] Speaker A: That is very unlikely now because there's no gasoline. Right. So I feel a little bit. That actually has made me more feel safer on the train. And, you know, interestingly enough.
So, yeah, it's. It's helped me. Yeah.
[00:40:47] Speaker C: If you want to hear more about that, go back and listen to episode one.
[00:40:50] Speaker A: Yeah, I talked episode one.
[00:40:52] Speaker B: It's. It's available on Spotify, wherever you listen to Spot.
[00:40:54] Speaker A: I know how to kick a window out on a subway train car. Now I know what to do.
[00:40:59] Speaker C: You gotta stop giving them the information.
[00:41:00] Speaker A: Yeah, that's right. That's right. Well, you gotta listen to the podcast. But a rational fear. Mine is elevators. You know, we.
[00:41:08] Speaker B: You were just talking about that coming.
[00:41:09] Speaker A: Down my elevator, like 100 floors up, you know, and like I love. Once I get up to his apartment, way up, you know, where he lives, I'm good. But just the elevator. And it makes so much the wind whistling as you're going up your elevator.
[00:41:22] Speaker B: I don't even notice. But I told you, my, My scariest elevator was Z100. Back in the day when I was working with them. They, they. They had a sales office that was across the street from Smith Wolinsky there. Dude, the craziest elevators, they went so fast, but they broke all the time. And they'd be hanging up and down and, like, I'm like, oh, my goodness.
[00:41:40] Speaker A: Well, see, I mean, with the, with the elevator. I mean, with the subway crash. And then, you know, I was on the bridge when the, the ship.
[00:41:47] Speaker B: Oh, yeah.
[00:41:48] Speaker A: Just recently, you know, and that, you know, and again, I feel very comfortable on Brooklyn Bridge. And that was very sad, sadly, that, you know, two young people passed away. But I, I'm. I am elevatorist. It's my. Is my fear, you know, And I'm. And the thing is, I'm on them all the time. Well, you don't. You.
[00:42:04] Speaker B: If you live in New York City, you're. You're on them.
[00:42:06] Speaker A: Elevator city.
[00:42:07] Speaker B: Totally.
[00:42:08] Speaker A: And not just a couple floors. No, we're talking.
[00:42:11] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:42:12] Speaker A: 100.
[00:42:12] Speaker B: Like, I live.
[00:42:13] Speaker A: There was this. Well, there was, There was. I was invited with a couple weeks ago to this Upper east side penthouse.
[00:42:21] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:42:21] Speaker A: You know. Yes. And it's not finished yet.
[00:42:23] Speaker B: You and Brittany and.
[00:42:24] Speaker A: Yeah, Brittany, exactly. And Jamie was there, too.
[00:42:27] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:42:28] Speaker A: And a few other people. But anyway, so I got there. It's one of the first few people there, and they were giving out hard hats and stuff. And I said, what elevator is this we're taking?
[00:42:39] Speaker B: Oh, my God.
[00:42:40] Speaker A: And it's an outside elevator. Oh. And I said, no, I passed.
[00:42:43] Speaker B: I, I could.
[00:42:44] Speaker A: I don't do it either.
[00:42:45] Speaker B: Do that either.
[00:42:45] Speaker A: No, I did it once because I went to one man. What's down where. Where Whole Foods is now, like, 1 Wall Street.
It's like the 70th floor. Yeah, that's the. When they gave us hard hats, I was like, oh, what's the hard hat floor? I've never had one. And we went on this outside elevator. It takes, like, 15 minutes of terror on these construction elevators. Then you have to walk on, like, a plywood plank 20ft into the building, but. And my leg, my knees were literally knocking. I, I, I was terrified. Nobody else was. I was like, am I crazy?
[00:43:16] Speaker B: So when we did the test drop for the New Year's Eve ball, Brittany and I.
[00:43:20] Speaker A: Are there. Yes.
[00:43:21] Speaker B: And they gave us hard hats. Right. And then I had this brief moment of like, all right, what. What is this elevator going to be? But it was a legit elevator in the middle of the building, you know, but it was like, oh, my God.
[00:43:34] Speaker A: Well, this. This. This penthouse that we're going to on the Upper east side, you know, that I was invited to.
[00:43:38] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:43:38] Speaker A: They gave us a hard hat. And then the elevators on the outside. And I said. I. I said, you guys, sorry, I do this.
[00:43:44] Speaker B: You and I could go off. Yeah, no, I. Yeah, I'm with you.
[00:43:48] Speaker A: So it's elevators. I'll get. You know, if it's inside a building, I'll do it, and I'm cool with it. But not these outside ones and stuff. Or even. They just make me nervous, I guess.
[00:43:57] Speaker B: In general, my most irrational thought here is. And you've been with me many, many times, is being on a rooftop in New York City when it's windy because we're hanging out with. I don't know, you know, we've got our cameras out there. We're. We're up above, you know, where. I don't. It's a total irrational fear that I'm going to somehow get blown off the building.
[00:44:19] Speaker A: That's funny.
[00:44:19] Speaker B: You know, and I just get. And I'll stand in the corner of our building, you know, right over there, where you can, like, get the whole shot between, you know, Madison Square park and all the way around to Hudson Yards. And. And I just mean, if the wind's blowing, I literally feel myself getting.
[00:44:34] Speaker A: That's funny.
[00:44:34] Speaker B: But Emily had the funniest one. When we're talking about this before we came down here today, because I'm. I had to be a part of this. She is. Her most irrational fear is being in Central park and having a squirrel run up her leg.
[00:44:47] Speaker A: I wouldn't think that's.
[00:44:48] Speaker B: No. She's like, if. And I have to do this when we're up there, because she also likes to go feed birds in the. In the winter, you know, they'll come right up to her hand. And then the squirrels, of course, because you're feeding them. You know, they're. They're circling her like, you know, but she gets totally flipped out. And then it's Shake Shack in Madison Square park when the rats come out.
[00:45:07] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:45:07] Speaker B: At night. Because you're sitting there, and I have to do this, and. And I'm like, I. I don't think me doing that they care about. I mean, and if I were a rat, I'd want to live next to Shake Shack at Madison Square park too. I mean, right?
[00:45:17] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:45:18] Speaker B: I mean, that's a little.
[00:45:19] Speaker A: That's outside seating. It's like an outside seating. Yeah. That's only outside. Nice. You know, water and I mean, rats don't bother me across the street. I've had rats scurry across my feet a couple times over the. You know, the 10 years, 15 years I've been here.
[00:45:33] Speaker B: Oh, that would.
[00:45:33] Speaker A: I mean, I mean it. I mean, I'm like, whoa.
[00:45:36] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. And I don't dusk that. Definitely scared.
[00:45:39] Speaker A: I don't freak out. I just like. I'm like a little cute rat just ran by my feet.
[00:45:44] Speaker B: A little rat. What was his name?
[00:45:45] Speaker A: Yeah. Ratatouille.
[00:45:47] Speaker B: Ratatouille. I was gonna.
[00:45:49] Speaker A: So. Yeah. Elevators for me.
Magical NYC place. Time and moment.
[00:45:56] Speaker B: Isn't that one of the best things about the city? I mean, like, it's. These are moments that are New York. Like, like and rooftop. So that we're talking about that.
[00:46:05] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:46:05] Speaker B: The first day you can go have rose in the summer on your rooftop in your shorts.
[00:46:11] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:46:12] Speaker B: That to me is a magical moment.
[00:46:15] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:46:15] Speaker B: You know, it's like the opening of rooftop season and we have all these fake summer day. Right. We've had a couple of. Yeah. We've had fake summer. I mean, all week here in New York City. No. Exactly. Well, yeah. Wait till the end of the week. And the next week is going to be like the.
[00:46:27] Speaker C: Feels like having a roof party on Saturday.
[00:46:30] Speaker A: You are.
[00:46:31] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:46:31] Speaker B: All right.
[00:46:32] Speaker C: Yeah. Juneteenth, baby. Juneteenth.
[00:46:35] Speaker B: Juneteenth baby.
[00:46:36] Speaker A: I'll be in Florida for my parents anniversary.
[00:46:38] Speaker B: 60Th.
[00:46:39] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:46:40] Speaker B: 60Th anniversary.
[00:46:41] Speaker A: Ladies and gentlemen, Ed and Betty Cop. My parents. I love you. Happy anniversary. 60th anniversary.
This will air after the anniversary so I can say it.
[00:46:49] Speaker B: That. That is. That is. Yeah. And. And then the first snowfall at Central park. And we're talking about that.
[00:46:56] Speaker A: That's.
[00:46:56] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:46:57] Speaker A: I'm trying to think of this the.
[00:47:00] Speaker B: First day you can eat outside too, you know, because we have like.
[00:47:03] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:47:04] Speaker B: I think they say nine seasons we have here.
[00:47:06] Speaker A: Right.
[00:47:06] Speaker B: We have fake spring. Real faced.
[00:47:09] Speaker A: First fake summer day. You just said. That's a tongue twister.
[00:47:11] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:47:12] Speaker A: First time's really fast. Yeah. First fake summer day.
[00:47:16] Speaker B: That's very good.
[00:47:17] Speaker A: That's. That's like in sometimes April even, and everybody's outside.
[00:47:21] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:47:21] Speaker A: It's amazing.
[00:47:22] Speaker B: And then we've been in like, like jackets the whole time.
[00:47:26] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:47:27] Speaker B: Because it's what feels like 65 out there today. Right. And. And, but I think we've got real summer coming. But we have a lot of seasons here, and it's difficult to come to New York City as a tourist because you can, like, you know, you, you can't. If you, if you like me, I will refuse to pack anything or check it. Right. So you've got your one set of shoes, your one jacket, and you better make that jacket call a good one. Right. I mean. But yeah, it was funny. So we have fake spring, fake winter.
[00:47:54] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:47:54] Speaker B: Yeah. Well, we're waiting for summer, but I think next week at this time, when you guys are sitting in the studio again next week, I think it's going to be real summer.
[00:48:03] Speaker A: Yep. Yeah.
[00:48:04] Speaker C: When people listening to the show.
[00:48:05] Speaker A: But I'll be in Florida where it's super duper hot.
[00:48:09] Speaker B: That is true.
[00:48:10] Speaker A: You know, another magical moment for me, which I really look forward to, I think we all do, is after, when summer's ending and we have that first day, you could wear a sweater.
[00:48:19] Speaker B: I know, Totally. We get to pull out our sweaters from our storage. See, if you live in New York City, you. What you don't understand. We're living in, like, really small places.
[00:48:27] Speaker A: Right.
[00:48:27] Speaker B: And, and we have storage. So you, you put your, you know, your summer stuff and then you rotate it out so you, you put your, your jackets and your sweaters away.
[00:48:36] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:48:36] Speaker B: And that time that you get to start, like, I think I'm gonna need it, and then you get to wear it.
[00:48:40] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:48:40] Speaker B: I know. That's so, that's.
[00:48:41] Speaker A: You're just so happy wearing your sweatshirt and pants by about, you know, you hop in bed like a little kid, all giggly with your extra comforts.
[00:48:49] Speaker B: I don't, I don't. I don't personally fall into bed with my sweater on.
[00:48:53] Speaker A: All your comfort.
[00:48:55] Speaker B: I mean, that's.
[00:48:55] Speaker A: No, you put out. You get your, you get like more blankets out and you're all like, you're like, amazing, you know, and that was.
[00:49:02] Speaker B: A, that was a. You know, radio is the theater of the mind. So your listeners. Right. Then when they hear you getting into bed all giggly and everything.
[00:49:08] Speaker A: That's. Yeah. Quite a picture you're talking about.
[00:49:10] Speaker B: I can't, I can't, I can't. I can't let that one go.
[00:49:13] Speaker A: Yeah.
Okay, Chris, you ready for the last one?
[00:49:17] Speaker B: Ready.
[00:49:17] Speaker A: As everybody listening is misconceptions about New York City.
[00:49:21] Speaker B: People are rude.
I would. That. That I don't even have to think about that. The idea that we're. We help people all the time when we're out. You're helping people that don't know where they're going. Get on this train. Go to that train. I have never found anybody where I found. You can be by yourself if you want to, which we talked about, but I think, you know, you can get an entire conversation with somebody just standing, waiting for the light to turn. You know, you can, you can engage with people. I, I think that people may misinterpret. Like, we're just direct.
[00:49:54] Speaker A: Right.
[00:49:54] Speaker B: You know, I mean, like, you know, but it's like, I, I think, I think that's a total misconception.
[00:49:59] Speaker A: I agree. 100.
[00:50:02] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:50:02] Speaker A: I mean, what I love too is when you're on the subway and I, I can't think of anything specific that happens, but something happens that's.
That's kind of weird to the side and you make eye contact with someone else and you're both on the same page, like.
[00:50:17] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:50:18] Speaker A: You know what I mean? You just can read each other's mind, like, okay, whatever. That's weird. Or that's. Yeah. I mean, you know, does that make sense?
[00:50:24] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:50:24] Speaker A: Do you ever have eye contact with someone across and you're kind of on the same page, like.
[00:50:28] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:50:29] Speaker A: Yeah. Is there New York moments where you're connecting? You're like. Yeah.
[00:50:34] Speaker B: And I would say chaos is the other one. A big misconception. So people are like, oh, my God, chaos. You know, you live in chaos. It's like, we love that.
[00:50:44] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:50:44] Speaker B: That's an energy.
[00:50:46] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:50:46] Speaker B: That. The chaotic nature of the city is, to me, an energy that you either find calming, which I've always done it. From the first time I was here, I'm like, I want to live here because it's like, it's all this energy.
[00:50:59] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:51:00] Speaker B: Also interpreted by some people as chaos. But it's like, I get calm in that. It's like, wow, this is great. And so I, I don't.
I know we live in a frenetic, high energy, high voltage city, but I actually find it calming.
[00:51:15] Speaker A: Me too.
[00:51:16] Speaker B: You know, I mean, it's like when I'm walking in Marina del Rey, you know, walking to Alfred's Coffee over there, I'm like, all right.
You know, the wind's blowing in the palm trees again.
[00:51:26] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:51:26] Speaker B: It's like, okay, wow.
[00:51:27] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:51:28] Speaker B: Right?
[00:51:28] Speaker A: Yeah. That's a whole different vibe going totally here.
[00:51:31] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:51:31] Speaker A: You know, I walked into.
Speaking of subway again. I actually have actually seen an empty seat, you know, and I. The one empty seat. And I sit there and I don't realize I'm walking Into a situation that was chaotic before I sat down. Like, the person next to me was acting crazy or something.
And then the next stop, that person will get off. And this is what's really cool is everybody in that area of the subway all start talking about the situation that just happened, right? And they're like, holy moly. Can you believe that just happened? And this happened. And I.
It's really cool to have everybody connecting and just kind of on the same page. Like, geez, that. Why did that person say that to this person? And blah, blah, blah.
[00:52:07] Speaker B: And what was up with that?
[00:52:09] Speaker A: Yeah. What happened?
[00:52:10] Speaker B: And going back to smells very quickly, some of the body smells in the summer in the subway. I would, I would say that would be a New York thing.
[00:52:17] Speaker C: Yeah. Please use deodorant, people.
[00:52:19] Speaker B: Yeah, no, I know.
[00:52:20] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:52:20] Speaker B: I've actually wanted to, as a public service, buy ads on the Links network here to go.
[00:52:26] Speaker A: Like, hey, you know, you don't know. You know what else I saw on the subway one time? So a few years ago, this young girl, I'll say young to me is 20s, but she passed out on the subway in the middle of summer.
[00:52:40] Speaker B: Oh, we had that at the, at the age walker.
[00:52:43] Speaker A: Somebody had a bottled water and like halfway through the train and everybody collectively in a packed train passed out water down the line to the girl and. And she had some sips and then she. She was better. She was okay.
[00:52:55] Speaker B: We had that happen at the, at the. The age walker one year, but somebody just passed out on the, on the sidewalk. We went and got a water.
[00:53:01] Speaker A: Everybody. Everybody.
[00:53:02] Speaker B: Totally, totally.
[00:53:03] Speaker A: It's. It's a really. It's really cool.
[00:53:05] Speaker B: That's what I'm like. I don't get that.
[00:53:07] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:53:08] Speaker B: I think if you're coming from, you know, a smaller Midwestern town and you come in here, I. I guess you could perceive it as rude, but it's like, you know, it's like. I don't. I don't feel that.
[00:53:20] Speaker A: Yeah. I remember just watching New Yorkers, you know, above everybody's heads moving down the line and, you know, packed subway to the.
[00:53:28] Speaker B: I get to go. So. So Craig and I are going to the, the.
[00:53:33] Speaker A: The.
[00:53:33] Speaker B: The Yankees game. That's Billy Joel bobblehead day. I am so psyched.
[00:53:37] Speaker A: Oh, that's pretty cool.
[00:53:38] Speaker B: I am so psyched. I don't know. Sometime in jail, I don't know.
[00:53:41] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:53:41] Speaker B: Something. But I was like a Billy Joel Yankees bobblehead.
Everything going on with him today. I mean, like, anyway, that.
[00:53:51] Speaker A: Wow.
[00:53:51] Speaker B: That was not one of the questions, but it was an editorial comment. Anyway.
[00:53:54] Speaker A: Well, I guess that that covers our podcast today, my friends. That was fun.
[00:53:59] Speaker B: It was great.
But they'll be the judge of that.
[00:54:03] Speaker A: Yes, yes, yes, yes.
